Introduction

Job interviews are more than just a formality; they are a chance to make a lasting impression. Exceptional interviews go beyond simply answering questions—they involve preparation, and the ability to communicate your unique value proposition with confidence.

Interviews are often the make-or-break moment in the job application process. They are not only an opportunity for employers to assess your suitability for a role but also a chance for you to showcase your skills, experience, and personality, and to assess if the role is right for you. Understanding the different stages of interviews, preparing for various types of interviews, and tailoring your approach based on your level of experience are essential steps to increase your chances of success.

In my role as a career coach, I often see clients who are anxious about interviews. There are several reasons for this, including the fact that they haven’t interviewed for quite some time, they don’t know how to prepare properly, or the interview has come up unexpectedly. Regardless of your reason, this blog will help you prepare effectively at every level of your career to experience exceptional interviews.

Steps to Exceptional Interviews and Securing Success

1. Developing Your Personal Brand

  • Define Your Unique Selling Points: Identify your key strengths, experiences, and achievements that set you apart from other candidates.
  • Develop Your Elevator Pitch: Create a concise and compelling summary of who you are, what you do, and what value you bring to potential employers.
  • Showcase Your Passion: Communicate your enthusiasm for the role and the company, demonstrating genuine interest and excitement.

2. Preparing Thoroughly

  • Research the Company: Gain a deep understanding of the company’s mission, values, culture, products/services, and recent news or achievements.
  • Know Your Audience: Research the interviewer(s) and tailor your responses and questions accordingly, demonstrating your understanding of their role and interests.
  • Practice, Practice, Practice: Rehearse your responses to common interview questions, focusing on describing your experiences and accomplishments clearly and confidently.

3. Making a Memorable First Impression

  • Dress Appropriately: Whether your interviews are face-to-face or virtual, select items that reflect the company culture and industry norms, ensuring you look polished and professional and make an excellent first impression.
  • Arrive Early: Plan your route and aim to arrive 10-15 minutes before your scheduled interview time, allowing for any unexpected delays. This also provides you sufficient time to focus, and apply strategies that will help you relax. For virtual interviews, ensure your technology is working and you are ready at least five minutes ahead of the scheduled time.
  • Maintain Positive Body Language: Sit up and project confidence through your posture, facial expressions, and gestures, conveying enthusiasm and engagement. For virtual interviews, ensure you look directly at the camera, maintaining eye contact with the interviewer as much as possible.

4. Communicating Effectively

  • Listen Actively: Pay close attention to the interviewer’s questions and cues, ensuring you understand their expectations and respond appropriately. If unsure about the question, ask the interviewer to repeat the question for clarity.
  • Speak Clearly and Confidently: Use a clear and confident voice, avoiding filler words or distracting verbal habits, such as “um” or “like.”
  • Be Concise and Relevant: Provide focused and relevant responses to each question, highlighting specific examples and achievements that demonstrate your expertise.

5. Demonstrating Your Value

  • Highlight Your Achievements: Showcase your accomplishments and contributions in previous roles, quantifying results whenever possible to emphasise your impact.
  • Link Your Experiences to the Role: Show how your skills and experience match the requirements of the position, showing how you are uniquely qualified.
  • Show Your Problem-Solving Skills: Share examples of challenges you’ve overcome or projects you’ve led, emphasising your ability to think critically and adapt to new situations.

6. Asking Insightful Questions

  • Seek Clarification: Ask thoughtful questions that are important to you to clarify any aspects of the role, team dynamics, or workplace culture.
  • Demonstrate Interest and Engagement: Show genuine curiosity about the company and the role, asking questions that delve deeper into key areas of interest.
  • Reflect on Your Research: Reference specific details or insights you gained from your pre-interview research, demonstrating your genuine interest and preparation.

7. Leaving a Lasting Impression

  • Interviewer FeedbackAsking the interviewer for feedback at the end of every interview is very important. This provides an opportunity to demonstrate your willingness to clarify any questions or concerns. You also show your commitment to self-improvement and commitment to do whatever it takes to ensure a strong candidacy, leaving a lasting and positive impression on the interviewer.
  • Express Gratitude: Thank the interviewer(s) for their time and consideration, expressing your appreciation for the opportunity to learn more about the role and the company.
  • Reiterate Your Interest: Express your enthusiasm for the role and your eagerness to contribute to the team, reinforcing your commitment to the opportunity.
  • Follow Up Promptly: Send a personalised thank-you email within 24-48 hours of the interview, emphasising your interest and briefly summarising key points of discussion.

Understanding the Stages of Interviews

  • Pre-Screening Interviews: These initial screenings are often conducted over the phone or via video conferencing and aim to assess basic qualifications and interest in the position.
  • First-Round Interviews: The first meeting with a potential employer to delve deeper into your skills, experience, and fit for the role.
  • Technical/Case Interviews: Common in fields like technology and consulting, these interviews assess your problem-solving abilities and technical knowledge through practical scenarios or case studies.
  • Behavioural Interviews: Employers use these interviews to evaluate how you’ve handled past situations, aiming to predict your future behaviour in similar circumstances.
  • Final Interviews: The last stage before a job offer, where you may meet with senior leaders or participate in panel interviews to ensure you’re the right fit for the company culture. Prepare thoughtful questions for the interviewer, showcase your interest in the company’s mission and culture, and follow up with a thank-you note afterward.

Preparing for Different Types of Interviews

  • Phone, Virtual and In-person Interviews: Ensure a quiet, distraction-free environment for phone and virtual interviews. Make sure your technology works ahead of time, and have a back-up plan in case of technical difficulties during the interview – issues can arise, so be prepared.
  • Panel Interviews: Research the panel members, address each member when responding, and maintain confidence and poise throughout.
  • Group Interviews: Showcase your teamwork skills, actively engage with other candidates, and find opportunities to stand out while still demonstrating collaboration.
  • Behavioural Interviews: Use a framework to respond to interview questions such as the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) method to structure your responses, provide specific examples, and highlight your accomplishments. Use specific examples to illustrate your skills and experiences, avoid vague answers, and be honest about challenges you have faced. Explain what you did to resolve the challenges and how you have applied your learnings.
  • Technical/Case Interviews: Practise problem-solving and critical thinking under pressure, review relevant concepts or frameworks, and communicate your thought process clearly.

Tailoring Your Interview Approach by Career Level

  • Entry Level Applicants: Emphasise your education, internships, and any relevant extracurricular activities or projects. Showcase your enthusiasm, willingness to learn, and adaptability.
  • Junior Positions: Highlight your hands-on experience, skills gained from entry-level roles or internships, and eagerness to take on new challenges and responsibilities.
  • Middle Management: Showcase your leadership abilities, experience managing teams or projects, and results-oriented approach to problem-solving and decision-making.
  • Senior Management: Focus on your strategic vision, track record of driving business growth and innovation, and ability to lead and inspire teams through change and uncertainty.
  • Executive/C-suite: Demonstrate your executive presence, extensive leadership experience, and track record of driving organisational success, influencing stakeholders, and shaping company strategy.
