7 Reasons Why You Might Need A Career Change

Is it time to make a significant change in your employment and life? It’s natural to seek out new horizons, where there are plenty of new challenges and opportunities for growth.

Here we run through some of the reasons why people seek a career change. Maybe it could provide you with the inspiration you need to find the perfect job opportunity that suits your needs and skills.

What are some of the top reasons for changing jobs?

On average, it’s said that we change careers five to seven times throughout the course of our lives. Let’s take a look at some of the biggest motivators to help you make the switch and jump into a new position.

You’d like to earn a higher salary

The almighty dollar is one of the leading reasons people seek a career change. An EdX survey found that nearly 40 per cent of people are motivated by a higher salary when looking for new employment opportunities. It makes sense that so many people seek new opportunities to improve their bottom line.

There are plenty of opportunities available that deliver healthier pay packets, but make sure this isn’t your only motivating factor when upskilling and applying for new jobs. You still want to enjoy what you do, be passionate about your role, and derive more out of your employment than just the big dollars.

You’re seeking a more flexible work environment

More and more Australians are embracing flexible work environments, with 67 per cent of employees now working at least one day from home, compared to 42 per cent before the global COVID-19 pandemic.

While the coronavirus expedited these arrangements, it was already a trend that was on the rise. Many employees seek a better work-life balance outside of the 9-5 grind, and numerous companies are willing to accommodate more flexible agreements.

COVID-19 meant that businesses of all sizes had to adapt to accommodate this. Now the software and technology exists so that many roles can be performed anywhere in the world. If you develop the right skills and seek out businesses that have embraced these changes, you’ll unlock a new level of work-life balance.

Chase new challenges and opportunities

If you’ve been in the same job for years, with no further opportunities for progression or growth, it may be time to consider new horizons.

The first step is to figure out what you want from your next position. What are some of the things that make work enjoyable for you? Are there any aspects of your current job that frustrate or bore you? Once we have an idea of what makes work more satisfying, we can start thinking about finding those opportunities.

Different values or philosophy

There are all sorts of reasons why your values or philosophy might change over time, and we highly encourage you to find a line of work that aligns with your current stance. For example, when we are young, passion for the job might trump income. Once children and other responsibilities kick in, our priorities naturally tend to shift.

Our personal beliefs and goals also change over time, and may no longer align with that of our current employer. For example, a corporate employee may decide to go and work for a charity or non-profit instead. You may find that the passion you had for the industry and the job when you first started has changed, and that’s natural, too. Follow your curiosity.

Move with the times

The digital age has claimed many victims. Print media, travel agencies, video and book stores and music outlets were all heavily impacted by the emergence of affordable, high-speed internet, streaming services and apps. In addition, there are many other industries under the gun, prompting workers to move with the times and look for more secure, future-proof jobs.

Research your profession to determine whether there is a way forward. Then, you can upskill and start developing the skills required to enter your new field.

You daydream about a new career

We all like to dream about scaling new horizons and achievements: the dream car, a holiday in some remote, exotic place. Many of the things that we regularly dream about are achievable, including finding a rewarding career.

Are you feeling disillusioned with your current job? You’re not alone. Surveys have shown that one in four Australians are not happy in their current role, and a staggering 70 per cent dream about a career change.

Don’t just stare out the window and wonder what it would be like on the other side – take those proactive steps to make your dream job a reality.

Your job impacts your health

This is a big one. If you are experiencing anxiety, depression, losing sleep, find yourself unable to switch off, or have physical symptoms like headaches, stomach pains or other stress-related ailments, it is time for a change.

Your job is never worth sacrificing your health for, and things won’t magically get better. This can extend to physical jobs as well. If you have spent years on the tools and your knees, back, or other joints, think about your comfort and health later in life and consider a career change that puts less stress on your body.
